Malmaison York

This was my first stay at a Malmaison hotel, and it definitely wouldn't be my last. I stayed for six nights, from August 5–11, 2025, and loved everything about this hotel.||The reception staff were friendly, energetic, resourceful, and genuinely helpful. I was having difficulty making reservations at other Malmaison hotels, and one member of the reception team went above and beyond by contacting the other hotels and arranging all of my future Malmaison reservations. His kindness and exceptional customer service made my travels so much easier and left a lasting impression.||Before this stay, I had never heard of the Malmaison brand. After such a wonderful experience in York, I found myself choosing Malmaison hotels as I continued traveling through England and Scotland. In fact, I visited cities like Aberdeen, Dundee, Newcastle, and Leeds because there was a Malmaison there. Before this trip, I had never even heard of those cities!||My room was modern, spacious, and beautifully designed. It included a comfortable seating area, a mini refrigerator, a large wardrobe, and plenty of storage for a longer stay. The bathroom was equally impressive, with a large walk-in shower, soaking tub, quality toiletries, plush towels, robes, and slippers. The bed was heavenly and provided an excellent night’s sleep.||The rooftop restaurant was another highlight of my stay. Every meal I ordered was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. It was one of the best hotel dining experiences I had during my travels.||The hotel was spotless throughout my stay, and every staff member I encountered was friendly and welcoming. York is easy to explore on foot, with the train station, historic attractions, and shops all within walking distance of the Malmaison.||This first stay made such an impression that I chose several other Malmaison hotels during my travels through England and Scotland, eventually returning to York for another stay.||This hotel introduced me to the Malmaison brand, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

The location of the hotel is great - short walk from the station and short walk into the centre. We stayed in a club room which was immaculately clean, the fridge, coffee machine and bottle of water were much appreciated and things like decent size towels and a little alcove in the shower to put your products were well thought out.

Unfortunately, despite being on the top floor, the noise from outside was constant (traffic and very loud music from a bar across the street) throughout the night. Add to this getting woken up by guests returning to their room at 01.30 in the morning who decided to have a chat in the hallway and this alone would be enough to stop me returning.

The air con would also not go below 19 degrees - the helpful staff on reception confirmed this was the lowest it would go, but it was not cool enough to make the room a comfortable temperature (I've stayed in another Malmaison and didn't have this problem).

The room, location and staff were all wonderful but the noise and room temperature would unfortunately prevent me from returning.

Went for afternoon tea as a local resident saw reviews .
Service slow although the staff were pleasant. went to pay took ages to take the Payment we lost our taxi due to length of time it took ..,
Biggest shock was ordered extra drinks
Went to pay they’d cheekily added VAT on the bill so £27 drinks ended costing £33 !
Although this is not advertised on the drinks menu was not made aware
Would I go back here again it’s a No a lot more reasonably priced and better quality establishments in York .

Great location for York. Lovely rooftop bar. Room clean and roomie.Reception staff very friendly.Just a recommendation - when booking in and reception give you your key card be good to put the “10% off food & drink” voucher in with it so you have it for the whole time of your stay. We only noticed a pike of cards on the reception desk when checking out - we could’ve saved quite a bit of money on our food and drink bill Still was a great place to stay.

Wanted to give the hotel 5 stars. Just a couple of niggles which you would not expect of a 4-star hotel in the centre of York. Staff lovely and friendly, breakfast fresh and delicious with a good choice. Rooms have a unique design of what can only be described as an open plan bathroom. I didn't mind it but I can see how others might. Bed big and comfy. Niggles included dust on cups and spoons, only enough shower gel for 1 shower, empty tissue box and a dirty towel (1 of 4). All put right at the first request but should not be needed in a 4-star hotel. Great location for city centre attractions. A little more attention to detail and it would have been 5 stars.

We received a voucher for an afternoon tea from our son. We booked a table, we were asked for our drink preferences by an enthusiastic server. She explained the voucher and seated us at nice table. She returned shortly with our drinks, and ten minutes later with our food. There was a great selection. Crispy chicken, coated in a slightly spicy sauce, sliders, prawn cocktail and scones with salted caramel butter, creme brushed and two other delicious cakes. ALL the staff were friendly and polite and made you feel valued. The hot drinks were unlimited, and very refreshing. The only thing missing, was the ability to partake of the feast outdoors. Well worth a visit. It was so good last time we bought our own voucher. The experience didn't disappoint, the quality of food and care was the same or better than last time, a truly uplifting experience. Many thanks Malmaison.

The staff are friendly, the public rooms are spacious, there’s a bar in the lobby and a better one on the roof with great views across to the Minster. The room itself was fine but I really don’t like the trend for open plan rooms. In this instance the bathroom is not separate but is hidden from the bedroom by a glass wall. Why can’t hotels just not build a simple bloody wall with a simple bloody door to get into the bathroom. It’s a growing trend and one that needs nipping in the bud.||Malmaison breakfasts are one of the last bastions of having to order your hot breakfast rather than having a full blown buffet (though there is a limited “continental” buffet lacking cheeses, meats, etc). I find breakfast in all Malmaisons acceptable but unlikely ever to impress. Adequate is the word.||Location-wise it’s great. A 5 minute walk to the station. 5 minutes in the other direction and you’re halfway to York Minster or the centre of town. ||If you’re looking for a convenient, clean, comfortable hotel then I can recommend the Malmaison. Not the first time I’ve stayed: unlikely to be the last

Really modern hotel, the rooms and public areas are all done to a high standard. The hotel is a 5 min walk between the railway station and the city centre. Despite booking a Club Room, we managed to upgrade to a Suite for £8.50(!) - the room was huge. Waterfall shower, large bath, a separate dressing area where the wardrobe was with sink, and various toiletries included. The room had a great view out towards the NRM. Only very slight downside was despite having their 'best' room the refreshments in the room, apart from water, were not included in the price.
Couldn't fault the service, everyone we encountered was really helpful and pleased to help. A nice extra was having a place to store our luggage before our train home.
Breakfast was delicious, large selections of cereal/pastries/fruit etc and a range of cooked breakfasts to choose from.
Unfortunately didn't get to the rooftop bar due to the weather. I would definitely return!
